Road Trip- Day 7

Climate Graph
So this is officially my first day in New Foundland! I am in Happy Valley goose and I Probably will only stay for a day since I was recently called to come back to Florida for business reasons, so I am going to make the most out of today. This city is way warmer than Yellowknife, since it is the summer the temperature today is around 25 degrees, and I heard that newfoundland gets an average amount of percipitaiton. What I appreciate is that all of the places I visited are not prone to natural disasters. The average temperature range is 32 degrees and Happy Valley goose Bay gets around 836mm of precipitation for a year. I noticed that there are many wetlands carved by glacial erosion. There are many plains and hills located in Happy Valley Goose Bay, but much of the landforms is similar to any landform located in the Taiga Shield. I learned that any place located in the Taiga shield shield is continental climate, except for Happy Valley goose, since it is in the maritime region and it is more abundant to water bodies.  The main rock types are sedimentary, whale back and glacial erratic rocks. The soil is similar to the soil in the Tundra, the soil is composed of needles, infertile, and has a high acid content. WELL ENOUGH ABOUT THE GEOGRAPHY LESSON, lets talk about my day today. So I am planning on fishing and kayaking and canoeing today. Usually the maritime regions are known for their lobster so I really hope i catch one. I am planning to go fishing at churchill river, and i decided I will canoe and kayak there as well. I better head out now and eat at as many lobster restaurants as possible. Canada is such an amazing country and I am not looking forward to my plane ride back to Florida:(

Bye !

Road Trip- Day 4-6

Taiga shield Ecozone

Today is the day I leave Yellowknife, North West territories and I was graciously awaken by the quacks of geese and ducks. I have a long day of traveling ahead of me so i know its time to wake up. I have decided that instead of taking a plane to Happy  Valley Goose Bay, Newfoundland and labrador; I will drive and enjoy Canada's beauty. The drive from Yellowknife to happy valley goose bay is 3 days and 14 hours if i take the shortest routes, I am lucky that most of the route is a long the taiga shield ecozone.  Driving through the long journey I realized a lot of weathering and erosion from rainstorms, rivers, floods, and freezing and thawing have worn down the rocks. During my drive I read that during the Precambrian Era the rocks were folded and faulted and wrapped by the earth's crust. During the drive I passed by some of the major bodies of water like Faber Lake, Great Slave Lake, Hudson Bay and Ungava Bay. Driving by your really able to see defined terrains and I realized that there are many areas made up of wetlands. Driving by I notice that the soil is less damp and more sandy, also there is no layer of permafrost covering the soil. There is a lot of various vegetation such as Paper Birch, Willows, trembling aspen, White Spruce, black spruce, dwarf birch, mosss, blueberries, Labrador tea, sedges, bearberry, cat tail, yellow pong lily patchwork of forest types because of Fires. Passing by the big bodies of water I see many birds resting near the water before heading north, or to their destination. I see many animals that I never knew existed like the marten, least weasel, spruce grouse, Arctic Tern, bonapere's gull and the pacific loon. These animals seem so peaceful and happy living in their clean environment. When I stop to eat and rest, I realize that the weather is way more warmer than yellowknife. I think I am going to stop blogging for the rest of the car drive, I will start when I reach my destination. I AM SO EXCITED:) !

Road Trip- Day 3

Paper Birch tree
Its early in the morning and its freezing cold! Its august and it is only 12 degrees. Did you know the average temperature in Yellowknife is -4 degrees? Wow. I just want to cuddle inside my sleeping bag, but today is my last day in this wonderful city and I have to make the best out of it. It is just my luck for it to be raining today, the day I want to go hiking. Did you know August is the month with the most precipitation, there is an average of 82 mm and the average temperature is 14 degrees. Anyways I put on my huge rain boots and rain jacket, pack a couple of granola bars and bottles of water and set out for my hike. The land forms are so beautiful, the most common rock type is sedimentary rock, and North America is known as the bedrock heart of the continent. The terrains look so green and clean while the soil is laced with permafrost, and it isshallow, course, soft, damp and high in acid content. The vegetation is beautiful, paper birch, willows and trembling aspen trees; as well as blueberries, labrador tea and sedges plants. The plants are covered with due and they all have different textures. The air smells so clean! There are many animals as well like the bald eagle, beavers, pacific loons, black bears and more. Did you know that the taiga shield ecozone has 50 species of mammals? After my good hike my new friends cooked me some fish, caribou and a drink made from the plants, it was very unique. Today my main plan was to visit one of the world wonders, the waterfalls near kakisa lake. I wanted to see the northern lights but kakisa lake was pretty far from where I was staying. I decided that the only way I could get there was by snow mobile. Driving in a snowmobile was so fun, a lot of adrenaline and the northern lights were so beautiful! Yellowknife was such a beautiful city.

Road Trip Day 2

Yellowknife River
Rock deposits laid down by glaciers
So I just got off my plane from Florida yesterday and I was too tired to explore. I was thinking about blogging on the plane ride, but I didn't have much to say. This is officially my first day in Yellowknife and I want to do so many things. From my plane ride I saw a lot of sceneries and I realized how beautiful Canada truly is. The weather is pretty chilly for August, but it is better than always spending money on AC in Florida. Today I decided to go fishing at Yellowknife River. Fishing, hunting and trapping are the biggest ecotourism activities to do here. Hopefully I can get my hunting licence soon. I am driving to Yellowknife river and I notice there is a lot of rolling terrain dotted with uplands, separated by wetlands forming a lot of bogs and dens. There are many rock deposits laid down by glaciers, shaped into a mosaic of ridges and eskers, it is so beautiful. Near the river I see a lot of wetlands with peat plateau and fens as well as a lot of moss. I was able to catch a huge fish that I will eat for dinner. We were driving back and I saw a caribou getting shot, probably for dinner. There were many other animals like ducks, loons, geese, and swans. I am getting really tired now, I think it is time to sleep in my trailer because it is getting very cold ! :S

Road Trip Day 1

Where I live
Destination # 1
Hi my name is Janani Thillainathan and I am a citizen of Florida, United States. I have been living in U.S.A for many years and I never truly traveled to Canada. I have heard that even though its really cold, the country looks amazing. I am planning to do a 1 week road trip to Yellowknife, North west Territories and then to Happy Valley Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. I have decided to take a plane to Yellowknife and start my journey there. I know I have to pack up layers of warm clothing, maps, food and things to entertain me on the way. I am very excited to finally voyage our neighbour country! :)

Destination # 2
I am currently on the plane to Yellowknife and I am so excited as I  view the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. I mean America is wonderful, but there are so many people, and a lot of pollution. I can't wait till I arrive!
